Cake Lingerie - MyBust™ – Personalise Your Fit

The always gorgeous Cake Lingerie have released their new collection and Belly Beyond is the very first in the country to get it.  This season Cake have added the revolutionary MyBust™which recognises that different size breasts have different needs when it comes to support, comfort and fit.

MyBust™ – Personalise Your Fit
Women are not all the same size, hence they have different needs and wants especially in nursing bras. By understanding that no two sizes are the same and that one bra style cannot cater for all the different shapes and sizes, us real women have, we have been able to create a technology that customises each bra to that particular size.

This revolutionary technology is called ‘MyBust™’. It is specifically designed so that each bra caters for that particular size. Different construction and styling has been applied to customise each bra as a ‘B’ cup women would not have the same needs and wants as a ‘G’ cup women.

Plunge bras have been specially engineered for B-D cups to provide more lift and give that desirable shape with the foam padding and plunged neckline. The balcony bras for DD-G cups are constructed to give optimal support and comfort with higher centre front wider straps and feeding clips.

Still keeping with our beautiful designs and functionality of 6 hook and eye band clasps with easy cotton lined drop cups, our MyBust™ technology further allows women to have an ideal bra customised to their needs.

Check out the gorgeous Velvet Delight or Turkish Delight here and choose your best fit!

Parent & Child Show Report

What a spectacular weekend we had at the Parent & Child Show.  So much fun to meet everyone and also to have a chance to catch up with our suppliers and really lovely to get to meet the people behind our fellow online sites - there's a definite sisterhood because we all know the challenges we face as mums and as business women!  So a big shout out to Kate from Naked Baby, Bex from Daisy Baby, Louise from Scamps, Sarah and Katrina from Things for Baby - how late were you up on the Sunday night answering emails?   ;)

What we'll remember:
  •  Meeting Tracey from Cake Lingerie.  Tracey is the creator of the brand, such a sweetie, and boy does she know her boobs (how to fit them into the right size bra I mean!).  There were long queues at times to get into the changing room and get professionally fitted by the expert and every woman who tried on Cake, bought it.
  • Hearing about a cockroach scuttling over to check out our stand close-up when Heidi and I were both on a walk-around.
The most memorable part of the show had to be the Belly Beyond Cake Lingerie Real Mums Fashion Show on the Main Stage on Saturday.  A huge thank you to our model mums, AJ, Jasmene, Alisha, Mandy and Sarah, who totally blew the crowd away with their gorgeous stage presence and confidence.  Takes courage to be on stage in your underwear, no matter how beautiful it may be, and to do so after having a baby and while pregnant is simply amazing - you absolutely rock!!

So without further ado, go and check out the Belly Beyond Cake Lingerie Real Mums at the Auckland Parent and Child Show photos on our Facebook page.

And for my lovely mother who won't join the rest of the world and join Facebook, here are the shots of her favourite granddaughter on stage demonstrating with aplomb, the SKIP*HOP Zoo Back Pack

    Bra Fitting Video

    Great video from the wonderful folks at Cake Lingerie which shows easy steps on how to ensure your bra fits the way it should.

    This video includes really helpful information on how a maternity bra should fit and the symptoms of an ill-fitting bra.

    It also answers that all important question:  When should I buy maternity and nursing bras?

    Belly Beyond Real Mums in the NZ Herald again

    Did you see the Belly Beyond Real Mums in the NZ Herald this week?

    The photograph has been cropped but there is no mistaking the Cake Lingerie and those gorgeous bumps!

    You can check out the rest of the shots from our now world-famous shoot in Belly Beyond Real Mums section here

    The article centres on the concern at the rising rate of C-Sections in New Zealand.  Having been through the factory that is National Womens at the Auckland City Hospital, it's no surprise to me to see the rate there is an astounding 31.7%!   I got the distinct impression getting mothers in and out of the wards seemed to be the target and lets face it, a c-section is a truck load faster than natural birth.

    It's curious to mention though that the term 'elective' does give the impression that mums are "too posh to push" and if you check out the replies on our Facebook page, mums don't often choose the c-section path, they follow the advice of specialists and health professionals that inform them the safest route is a c-section - hardly 'elective', and not a path chosen lightly.

    There are few women who have the courage of their knowledge of birth and it's natural process who will fly in the face of a medical 'expert' and insist on a natural birth - why would you?

    Why do you think the c-section rate is climbing both here and overseas?

    Meet the Cake Lingerie Real Mums - the faces (and bumps!) behind the Real Mums, Real Fit campaign

    We are absolutely stoked to properly introduce you to the Cake Lingerie Real NZ Mums!  Follow the link here to learn a little but more about each of these gorgeous women.

    It was a pleasure and a challenge to put together the whole campaign in New Zealand for Cake Lingerie. The photo shoot went absolutely without a hitch – a piece of Cake you might say!

    Our highlight moments from the search and photo shoot:

    * We were travelling back a speaking engagement in Tauranga and discussing the shoot, due to take place the next day and we'd just said we really need a little something to add a difference for some of the shots. Just then we passed through Paeroa and an antique shop with the most perfect antique dolls pram parked outside. It was spooky in it's timing and we couldn't resist it and it made a very cute addition to the shoot.

    * We loved photographing the kids and the mums together. There's nothing like blowing some bubbles to bring out the laughter and smiles!

    * Watching gorgeous Mums salsa dance in their underwear with cupcakes at 9 oclock on a Sunday morning isn't something you see every day.

    * A highlight for everyone was meeting Alisha’s 10 week old twins who were there for the entire shoot and were such angels!

    * Working with Lisa at ImageME, what a total pro. Now we know first-hand why she is a People Photographer of the Year award winner.

    * Meeting Chanel for the first time (there’s a leap of faith) after she flew in from Dunedin was a memorable moment for us.

    * It was great to see the husband's reactions at seeing their wives in full photoshoot mode when they dropped the kids in near the end of the shoot.

    A big thanks to:

    * Tracey and Keith from Cake Lingerie
    * The Langham Hotel
    * ReachME for the fantastic prize packs for our 10 finalists
    * Lisa Crandall at ImageME
    * Nykie Grove-Eades for behind the scenes shots of the day
    * Delish Cupcakes
    * Sara from Seb Makeup
    * and of course our fantastic Real Mums - Alisha, Chanel, Debbie and Maree

    To wire or not to wire? That is the maternity bra question.

    By Tracey Montford - Designer and Founder of Cake Lingerie

    The question is not an easy one to clearly answer and hence several suppliers and so called authorities in the matter have chosen to ignore it, categorically stating women should not wear underwire. I attempt to put to rest this subject once and for all, so please bear with me.

    There is no categoric evidence linking the use of underwired bras to causing mastitis. It is one of those myths that has self permeated in countries like Australia, NZ and the UK. Some older schools of thought and so called bra-fitting authorities have previously promoted the use of the same bra during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Studies have shown the two periods to have a unique set of characteristics and in most cases, different size bras will be required. So please check for the below symptoms;

    The key points to look out for when wearing a maternity or nursing bra are;

    1) Ensure the channel of the cup sits around the base of the breast tissue (flush against the ribcage), not on the breast tissue - Should the channel be sitting on the breast tissue, the cup size is more likely than not too small - go up a cup size and vice versa.

    2) Ensure the top part of the cup isn't cutting into the breast - should you witness this symptom, the cup isn't deep enough for your breast and is more likely than not too small - go up a cup size and vice versa.

    3) The breast should not feel compressed, flattened or restricted by the bra cup fabric - consider going up a cup and vice versa

    4) The side of the bra cup should encompass the breast tissue and not be placed on it - Should you witness any bulging, the cup size is more likely than not too small - go up a cup size or try another bra style

    5) The horizontal band (where the hooks and eyes come together) should not ride up your back when fastened, struggling to take the weight of your breast. Try adjusting the shoulder straps but if that doesn't help, get yourself a new bra. This one has lost its ability to perform its function and provide sufficient support.

    Please note, a bra typically has a worn life of about 6 months. The elastics and fabrics lose their elasticity and strength due to regular and wear. To ensure good breast health, change your bra regularly whilst using the opportunity to look out for the above mentioned symptoms!

    Most importantly, get a bra that provides a degree of separation in the centre front area (between your boobs). Whist a 'Madonna/ Cone' shaped breast look isn't flattering for most women, it's important to have a degree of separation as this is the ideal position for the breast and avoids the ligaments being stretched. Besides a mono-boob look is not attractive. But that's for another article...

    I suggest putting your underwire bra away during the first 2 weeks from when your milk is coming in. This can generally take place a week prior to birth and a week after. The breast will generally settle after this period after which you can wear your wired nursing bra. Importantly though, do check for the above mentioned symptoms. Should you witness any of the same, get a new bra. The reality is that you would have worn that bra during your pregnancy anyway, so its time for a change.

    I can guarantee you one thing; you will never get the support and a secure enough feel from a non-wired maternity or nursing bra, so unless you want to look like my grandmother or desire a 'East - West' flattened shape, do invest in one or two wired maternity and nursing bras. They are particularly useful on days when you need that added secure, supportive look and feel.

    Another option to consider a Flexible Wire Maternity and Nursing Bra. These exist on the market and will provide the best of both worlds. Mainland Europe, Scandinavia and the US predominantly use underwire maternity bras and underwire nursing bras. Increasingly so brands in the Australia, NZ and the UK are introducing them.

    Lastly, for what its worth, 5 years ago whilst breast-feeding I wore non-wired maternity and nursing bras. I ended up with Mastitis and it certainly had nothing to do with Wire Maternity and Nursing Bras.

    Comment from Belly Beyond:  This is a very interesting article for us because we've been doing a lot of work recently on maternity bra fit.  While correct bra fit is important for each and every women, there's no doubt for us that it is particularly important for those larger cup sizes, DD upward.

    Stay tuned for some interesting (and funny) information from us on our discoveries and in the meantime if you are interested in a Flexiwire nursing bra then check out of the exquisite Plum Pudding from Cake Lingerie.

    ‘Real Mums’ Bare All for the Cake Lingerie Shoot

    Media Release - Not many competitions require winners to bare all, especially not those ‘in the family way’, but the Cake Lingerie competition did just that, with a nationwide search for four gorgeous New Zealand ‘Real Mums’ to be the faces and bellies of the Cake brand for 2010.

    Competition winners were selected (appropriately) on Mothers Day, from an extremely high calibre of entries of pregnant or nursing mums and brought to Auckland for the shoot. For all four winners, this was the first time they’d bared all for the camera and all declared it a nerve-wracking, but empowering experience.

    In conjunction with Cake Lingerie, the competition was created and organised by Louisa Currie and Heidi Riley, friends and founders of website Belly Beyond, and the resulting photo shoot will help launch the new Cake Lingerie range to the world. The organisers are thrilled with the response from entrants and support for their campaign. “Our desire was not to use existing models or a catalogue shot offshore,” says Louisa. “We wanted to show just how beautiful the mums-to-be in our own towns and neighbourhoods are” she said “and show them off to the world”.

    “Choosing just four participants was a challenge. There were so many great and deserving women who entered, but the four we chose just had something really special about them, said Heidi.

    The four winners were; Alisha Grimmer from North Shore City, Maree Hall from Hamilton, Chanel Gardner from Dunedin, and Debbie Heaney also from North Shore City.

    All four women got the chance to be pampered by a professional hair and makeup team before revealing their pregnancy curves in fabulous designer maternity lingerie from Cake Lingerie. They also each won a fabulous $400 prize pack. Louisa and Heidi helped art direct the shoot and were hands-on in making the day a success.

    “It was unanimous on the day that all the women were proud mothers and celebrated what their bodies could achieve through pregnancy,” says Chanel, “It’s amazing to be part of something that is focused on empowering women at such an amazing stage of life.”

    Alisha was “surprised and thrilled” on finding out she was selected as one of the winners. And really enjoyed the experience on the day, “What more could a girl ask for, I felt special and good in myself; I was pampered and surrounded by inspiring women, and wearing a gorgeous product!”

    The contest has been judged a success by organisers and now it is up to the public to see the results. “We have received great feedback from women all around the country who love the fact we’re promoting a healthy pregnant body image” said Louisa. “And we hope we can find another group of exciting talented, beautiful real women again next year.”

    Cake Lingerie specialises in the creation of high fashion maternity lingerie that combines old-school glamour with style and comfort and is now available in 16 countries. The full catalogue of shots will be available soon on www.bellybeyond.co.nz and at www.cakelingerie.co.nz

    Cake Lingerie Real Mums Search - the photo shoot!

    Cake Lingerie, in association with Belly Beyond, went on a nationwide search for 3 pregnant or breast feeding mothers (or both!) to become the faces of their promotional photo shoot for their latest collection ‘Let Them Eat Cake’.

    Our criteria is simple -  real women that are pregnant or nursing, in all different shapes and sizes, ages and ethnicity.
    We were looking for women who are proud of their beautiful curves of pregnancy and motherhood and could show the world that real women are beautiful and should be featured far more in the media.  In the end we couldn't decide on just 3 so chose 4 Real Mums.
    It was shoot day on Sunday and what an amazing day.

    Our 3 mums-to-be and 1 mum were up bright and early for hair and make up kicking off 7am by the brilliant Sara (and her lovely assistant) from Seb Make Up

    The girls looked GORGEOUS in their Cake Lingerie.  Heidi and I said they were so gorgeous and so natural that people wouldn't believe they weren't professional models.
    Lisa, our photographer was superb and you can see why she is an award-winner.  Her natural affinty with people was clear and she soon had the girls relaxed in front of the camera. Salsa music was a great ice breaker  but seeing 4 gorgeous Mums in rather beautiful underwear, salsa dancing music at 9am on a Sunday is not something you see every day!

    There's a press release going out today with the winners details which I will put up so I won't spoil the surprise by giving their full names but here is a little bit about each of our lovely winners:

    Alisha (33)  Bayswater, North Shore City
    Mum to Jayden (2 ½) and breastfeeding 10 week old twins Ava Lea and Talia Rose. Ava has a large hole in her heart that needs surgery in the next few months.

    Alisha holds a Bachelor of Science and prior to being a mum worked as a buyer and retail manager. She has plans study Midwifery as soon as time allows!

    Debbie  (27)  Milford, North Shore City

    31 weeks pregnant with her first baby (a boy) Debbie in on maternity leave from her nursing role. (Case Manager for rehab client)

    Debbie enjoys yoga and reading and long walks on the beach.

    I’m joking about the long walks on the beach – just checking you are paying attention ;)

    Chanel (29) St Clair, Dunedin

    28 weeks pregnant with her second child, she is mum to 7 year old Grace.

    Chanel is a practicing family lawyer who loves living in the next to the beach in Dunedin and the living so close to the best of the South Island (Queenstown is a fave).

    Maree (29) Hamilton

    Mum to Gabriella, 2, and now 29 weeks pregnant she lives in Hamilton and works part-time for Telecom. This is her 3rd pregnancy and is extra special after losing her second baby at only 20 weeks.

    Maree is enjoying settling back in NZ after living overseas in Hawaii and Australia for the last 5 years.

    Congratulations ladies - you were fantastic!
    _____________________________________________________________________________

    We received an fantastic response from all over the country and can't wait to see these Real NZ Mums as the faces of an international brand!

    Release of the photos is a couple of weeks away but trust us when we day the wait will be worth it.
